Sugar Snap Peas are one of the first seeds planted in the field.  They mature better with cooler temperatures.  These peas are usually ready for harvest in about 60 days after planting.

These beautiful seedlings, green with purple stems will soon be Kohlrabi.

Both the stem and leaves are edible of the plant.  Kohlrabi leaves can be used as a substitute for collard greens and kale.  The taste and texture of kohlrabi (bulb part) are very similar to a broccoli stem or cabbage heart. But milder and sweeter.

What happened this week?

-Our large greenhouses have been filled and now we are working to move the heartier seedlings into the unheated greenhouses to make more room for continued seeding.

Some of the plants have their second set of leaves and are ready for a period of “hardening off” in the unheated greenhouse.  This time gives the plants a period of strengthening before being planted into the field.

-The currants needed to be weeded and pruned for this season.  Pete used the dump truck to relocate the mulch closer to the plants.  The mulch needed to be spread on base of each plant.  Spreading the mulch on the base of the plant will protect the roots as well as keeping the weeds down.  Not only dose protect and keep the weeds down, mulch conserves soil moisture and  provides food for the soil.
